Wat Phra Kaew - Temple of the Emerald Buddha

Wat Phra Kaew - Temple of the Emerald Buddha

Buddhist Temple in Thailand

Considered the most important Buddhist temple in Thailand, Wat Phra Kaew is situated within the grounds of the Grand Palace in Bangkok’s historic Rattanakosin district. The temple, known officially as Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram, houses the Emerald Buddha. This highly revered Buddha image was carved from a single block of jade, and is widely called the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
No person is allowed to get close to the Emerald Buddha, except for H.M. the King. 3 times a year, in an important changing of the robes ritual performed by the Thai monarch, a seasonal cloak on the Emerald Buddha is changed corresponding to the summer, winter and rainy seasons. The ritual seeks to bring the Kingdom of Thailand good fortune in each season.

Erawan Waterfall - Kanchanaburi

Erawan Waterfall - Kanchanaburi

Waterfalls in Thailand

Covering over 500 sq.km, Erawan National Park is surrounded by stunning scenery and houses the famous Erawan Waterfall. The park is covered with 75% forest and if you're lucky you might just catch a glimpse of an elephant, wild monkey or even an eagle.
Erawan Falls has seven levels dropping down over 1,500m and is regarded as one the more beautiful in Thailand.
You can walk to each level fairly easily on the paths but if you're aiming to get to the very top then it's a bit of a scramble up the cliff, although it's worth the effort.
You can swim in some of the pools created by the falls. Around the park are also several caves where you can explore and see some weird and wonderful limestone formations, stalactites and stalagmites.
The best caves to see are Wang Bahdan, Pratat, Rua, and Mee, which has five "rooms" to be explored.

The Beaches of Hua Hin

The Beaches of Hua Hin

Hua Hin Beaches

A favourite Thai resort for over 70 years, there are 3 local beaches accessible from Hua Hin town center so you have plenty of choice of where to catch those rays and take a swim in the Gulf of Thailand.
Hua Hin Beach stretches some 7 kilometers from the town center to Khao Takiab. It has developed considerably, especially over the past 5 years, but you can still find quiet spots away from the main hotels. Tides are high from November to February which tends to make the beach feel more claustrophobic in the high season, but at other times of the year, when the tide is out, you'll feel that you have it to yourself. Deck chairs and tables are available for hire, and it’s possible to get a Thai massage right on the beach. Visitors can also choose to go horse riding or just stay put and let vendors bring them snacks and wares. It’s best to be wary of jellyfish in the rainy season, between July-October.
Every June, Hua Hin Jazz Festival attracts world-class jazz musicians from around the kingdom and all over the world.  The free festival is held right on the beach and is a huge draw with locals and international visitors alike.
Hua Hin was popularised as a resort town in the early 1920s by King Prajadhipok and the Hua Hin Vintage Car Rallycelebrates that fact each December when a parade of vintage and classic carstravel along the promenade.  Both drivers and passengers are dressed in 1920s attire, and afterwards celebrations move onto a grand 1920s-themed party.
Starting in March, the Thailand International Kite Festival features all manner of kites, from stunt to high-tech and traditional Thai.  Besides displays of international kites, visitors can shop all things kite-relatedand then fly their own.
During high tide, parts of Hua Hin beach can completely disappear. Besides the usual beach activities of sunbathing, swimming and snorkelling, visitors can also enjoy nearby golf courses, luxuriant spas, labyrinthine caves, breath-taking viewpoints, waterfalls, bustling shops, freshly-caught seafood and explore local national parks.
Khao Takiab Beach can be found some 7 kilometers south of Hua Hin. The hill has a temple at the top and there are troops of monkeys that can be fed. For this reason it is also often referred to as ‘Monkey Mountain’. The beach at Khao Takiap is actually better behind the hill at Blue Wave where there are big expanses of beach and calm shallow waters ideal for children.
Suan Son is further south of town, approximately 15 kilometers. It is named after the numerous pine trees that fringe the beach. This is apopular spot for locals and you’ll be hard pushed to see other westerners. The beach is wide and uncluttered and the ocean clear and inviting.

Chiang Mai Walking Street

Chiang Mai Walking Street

Shopping in Chiang Mai

The historic Northern Thai city of Chiang Mai is famous for its outdoor markets including its 2 weekend- evening Walking Streets. The larger of the 2 takes place every Sunday from around 16:00 to midnight on Rachadamnoen Road leading down from the moat and Thapae Gate in the Old City. It’s a huge showcase of local handicrafts of all kinds such as fashion, jewellery, home décor, local ceramics, shoes, handbags and more, displaying the traditional arts and culture of the ancient Lanna Kingdom and the many local hill tribes.
Unlike in the Night Market, there’s hardly anything resembling designer rip-offs, although the fake Rolexes as popularised by Madonna make an occasional appearance. The street is home to a number of temples, all of which turn into outdoor food courts for the night, giving a plethora of opportunities to try authentic Lanna foods at incredibly low prices. This pedestrianised walking street attracts Thais as well as tourists and is growing larger by year due to its popularity, street musicians, traditional puppeteers and huge numbers of goods on show at the stalls.

Rachadamnoen Street is lined with coffee shops and bars, with people-watching a favourite occupation. Thai dancing shows are often performed in the tiny squares and temple grounds. Arriving before it gets dark gives the chance of a visit to Wat Chedi Luang, set half-way down the street, once home in the 15th century to Thailand’s famed Jade Buddha and still home to the ancient Pillar of the City legendarily charged with keeping the town safe from invaders.

The smaller walking street opens on Saturday evenings along Wualia Road. Located just outside the moat, it’s less crowded, even more traditional and less touristy than the Sunday Walking Street. Here you’ll find stalls selling the beaten silver goods for which the enclave is famous, many clothes and shoe stalls, arts and crafts and even antique textiles and artifacts.
